Samsung takes top spot in LCD TV market

Boosted by growing consumer demand for advanced TVs, Samsung carved out a leading share of the U.S. LCD TV market in the first quarter, according to data released Monday by iSuppli.

For the quarter, the South Korean company shipped 1.1 million LCD TVs. Though that number was down 33 percent from the fourth quarter, Samsung still beat out the overall industry, which saw its shipments drop by 35.8 percent. This difference helped Samsung inch its market share up to 18 percent from 17.3 percent in the previous quarter.The overall decline in LCD TV shipments is normal for that quarter, noted iSuppli, as sales typically peak during the fourth-quarter holiday season before falling to the lowest point of the year. Many manufacturers also use the first quarter to clear out stock of older models to pave the way for new ones.

Amtran reports almost 30% revenue sequential drop for January 2010

Taiwan-based LCD TV maker Amtran Technology has posted revenues of NT$4.25 billion (US$132.41 million) for January 2010, down 29.52% sequentially from NT$6.04 billion in December, and down 7.04% on year from NT$4.58 billion, according to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

The Company noted that the revenues decrease was mainly due to shortages of panel components.

Compal targeting to become the largest maker of LCD TVs

Compal Electronics is aiming to become no.1 in LCD TV manufacturing after having become the number one notebook manufacturer in 2009, according to company president Ray Chen speaking at the company's year-end banquet.


Chen noted that Compal aims to see on-year LCD TV shipment growth close to double each year. Compal's LCD TV shipments grew from only 1.8 million units in 2008 to 3.3 million in 2009, and are targeted to hit six million units in 2010.

But it's here and LG proudly stand by their achievement and very proud they should be too. Due to the minuscule dimensions, the 'Extreme Slim' TV only weighs 4kg and on its stand takes up very little room.
