Compal Electronics is aiming to become no.1 in LCD TV manufacturing after having become the number one notebook manufacturer in 2009, according to company president Ray Chen speaking at the company's year-end banquet.
Chen noted that Compal aims to see on-year LCD TV shipment growth close to double each year. Compal's LCD TV shipments grew from only 1.8 million units in 2008 to 3.3 million in 2009, and are targeted to hit six million units in 2010.
For the notebook segment, Chen pointed out that Compal's shipments for 2009 were higher than its original prediction of 32-35 million units early in the year and reached 37.9 million units; therefore, he believes that the company will be able to ship more notebooks than its forecast 46-48 million units for 2010 with a chance to challenge 50 million units.
Kinpo-Compal Group chairman Rock Hsu also noted that in addition to Compal's sixth notebook plant, which will start mass production in June 2010 in Kunshan, China, the company is currently evaluating plans to establish a new plant in Brazil, as well as expand its plants in North America in 2010. Meanwhile, Kinpo Electronics aims to ship 15 million set-top boxes (STBs) in 2010.
As for the group's telecom service subsidiary Vibo Telecom, Hsu expects its user-base to expand from 1.5 million in 2009 to total two million in 2010. The subsidiary is expected to reach its break-even point in the third quarter.
