Japan market-Rise in Flat-panel TV shipments

Date: December 28, 2009

Flat-panel TV shipments increased 55.9% on year to 1.53 million units in November in Japan, mainly due to growing demand for digital TVs and eco-friendly devices, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).

Shipments of 30- to 36-inch LCD TV increased 63.1% on year to 527,000 units, while 37-inch and larger model shipments increased 51.4% on year to 153,000 units in November, JEITA noted.

Medium-size models for the second TV in a household will become the major growth driver in Japan LCD TV market because replacement demand is no longer strong in the maturing LCD TV market in Japan, market observers commented.

Japan and Korea plan to terminate analog signal broadcast in 2010, while other countries will follow suit in the next few years.

Japan's Eco Point program also helped drive the growth of its LCD TV market. The program gives consumers points for purchasing certain types of energy-efficient products. The points can be used to exchange for other products and services.
