Vizio makes big 3D move - affordable 3D LED TVs and glasses

Date: June 30, 2010

Vizio makes big 3D move - affordable 3D LED TVs and glasses Vizio has an intriguing position in the LED TV world: not a leader, but a follower that makes quality TVs for the commonman. With the belief that everyone is entitled to the latest TV technology, Vizio has created a model of high impact technology at affordable prices. The model, now, will not be limited to simple LCD TVs. The "Where Vision Meets Value" business model will now extend to 3D LED TVs.

Vizio doesn't claim to be the leading innovator in TV technology, nor does it claim to have the best product. What Vizio provides is affordability that translates into high TV sales volumes. Sure, Samsung controls the TV market, but in Q1 of 2010, right below Samsung was Vizio with a 16.7 % LCD TV market share, and in Q1 through Q3 of 2009, Vizio was the #1 shipper of LCD HDTVs; not Sony, not LG, not Sanyo, not even Samsung.

As a market share leader but technology follower, Vizio is in position, with 3D LED technology, to take on the 3D trend a little late and provide a competitive edge in pricing and product positioning.

It appears, that is exactly what Vizio intends to do.

At the CEA Line Show in New York, Vizio showcased a line of 3D-ready products, but the most notable was the 65-inch XVT3D654SV 3D LED TV. What was unique about the TV was that Vizio decided to use Circular Polarization to create the 3D effect, not the typical active shutter technology.

So what's the big deal?

As many have been saying all along: 3D glasses, for the most part, are the Debbie Downer of the 3D revolution. Most active shutter glasses cost between $100 and $150. Manufacturers and retailers have smartly packaged deals to include glasses with 3D TVs, but for those looking to entertain others with their 3D TV, it becomes a pretty expensive amenity.

Vizio, by offering Circular Polarization, will essentially be able to offer a 3D TV with $10 glasses so a party, no matter what the size, can enjoy the entertainment without breaking the bank just on glasses.
